With the aid of understanding how God sees us humans, it is possible to explain Purgatory through this route. In continuation with some of my musings on human dignity, we can begin to explain many aspects of the Catholic faith.
First off, let's begin with this initial statement: Jesus cleanses the soul when he forgives us our sins. The Church regards the human soul or human dignity highly. We're not mere dung covered with snow. To believe this concept means we're putting ourselves down. We are not super depraved to the point that we're worth nothing. It's bad enough that mortal sin can do this. We are originally created with the image and likeness of God first of all. For God to create a bunch of crap would be inconceivable. Imagine this image, who would want to be surrounded with snow covered dung? Sure, it looks white but it still stinks. could you imagine God surrounded with a bunch of white-colored pieces of crap? Unthinkable.
The Church does not see it that way. We were created special and therefore we're not crap. And those of us who think we are should just stop. First off, Jesus wouldn't die for pieces of crap. No, we're worth more. He came to die for humans. We are that important that a God would be willing to die for us. Again, the human dignity concept is put into play. We are important enough to be saved. Covering dung with snow is still dung inside.
So how does this play into the concept of Purgatory? Since we're not pieces of crap and God can't surround himself with crap, what then? But even if we're not pieces of crap, we still are stained due to sin. Shouldn't there be a cleansing stage? Hence the need for Purgatory. Since God can't surround himself with something opposed to him, he needs to cleanse us from it. That is exactly what happens in Purgatory; we are cleansed so we can be pure when we meet God.
Man, I can't believe how much the word "crap" is used in this entry. Hey, I'm stating a point.
