I ran into a question in the Catholic forums and found it amusing. The question was "Why does God hate sex?" Then she goes on to mention why we Catholics seem to have a dualistic approach towards sex. I would like to tackle this question with my perspective with the help of the Theology of the Body.
First off, I would like to say that real Catholics do not have or should not have a dualistic approach to sex or to anything at all. So let's tackle the question, shall we? Does God really hate sex? God commanded us to go forth and multiply. How do we multiply? Through intercourse. That alone will say something, doesn't it? If God hates sex, why would he want us to populate the world? Sex is not a necessary evil. We have to look beyond our past. When we were children in Catholic school, we were given a lot of don'ts. Don't do this, don't do that. The problem however, is that people got stuck with that and never grew up in the faith. So all they know is that the Catholic church is just a bunch of Do's and Don'ts. That's absolutely an incorrect way of looking at us.
Dr. Scott Hahn once mentioned this in a talk I attended: Sex isn't good, Campbell's soup is good. Sex isn't great, Frosted Flakes are great. So what is sex, then? Sex is holy.
Yes it is holy. That's how real Catholics see it. It is a sacred act similar to when the priest consecrates the Host when he says, "This is my body." If you had an object you held sacred, what would you do with it? Wouldn't you protect it and keep it safe? That should be how sex is looked at.
Man is so darned interested in sex. Rightly so, because we are hardwired for it. But because of original sin, the proper way of looking at sex has been clouded. We are so interested in sex because it is what makes us most like God. We are created in his image and likeness. Sex is the physical manifestation of a love the husband and wife has for each other. And when they receiprocate that love, it becomes fruitful. Sex is so holy and good, we don't have a clue what to do with it. And so the church does what it does to safeguard something sacred.
And on another note yet related, the devil hates the body so much and that is why he does his utmost best to distort anything that involves the human body. It is Satan who truly hates sex, not God.
