I'm going to make a quick analogy that I learned today from Steve Ray.
The Catholic church can be compared to a boat, a large boat. Let's use a giant cruise ship as an example. In this giant ship, we have a captain and crew and with everything we might need for the journey. The captain of course is our Pope. The crew obviously represents the rest of the religious. We are the passengers. The ship also has to have a navigation system. The navigation system consists of Scripture and Tradition. The cruise consists of feasts. The feast of course is the Mass, where we enjoy a meal. We have everything we need on this ship. Steve Ray even went to mention the showers as a representation of Confession.
Now during the course of the cruise, some people get tired and start to question the authority of the captain. They start a mutiny. Sadly, they leave the boat and start creating their own boats or using the lifeboats. Some of them end up in rafts. Now there are 30,000 boats and rafts that leave the giant ship. Some of them are too far from the cruise ship and some of them are close to it. Those who are close to the ship have a chance of coming back. Those who are far from the ship, well, you know...
So why be Catholic? Well, we have the fullness of the truth. You may think it's arrogant of us to say such a thing. In reality, we're just saying the truth. We are the ultimate ride on the journey of life and our destination is called heaven.
